Rady School Study Reveals Significant Economic Contribution of Military to San Diego
A recent study conducted by the Rady School of Business at
San Diego
. The study, titled “
Measuring the Economic Impact of Military Spending in San Diego County
“, found that
military-related activities
contributed an estimated $18.6 billion to the local economy in 2017, which represents about
13%
of the total regional gross domestic product (GDP).
“This study underscores the important role that the military plays in San Diego’s economy,” said James Hamilton, a professor of economics at the Rady School and lead author of the report. “Our findings demonstrate that military spending not only sustains jobs in the region, but also generates substantial economic activity through multiplier effects.”
According to the study, there are approximately
108,000 jobs
in San Diego that can be directly or indirectly attributed to military spending. These jobs span a wide range of industries, including healthcare, education, and construction. Moreover, the study revealed that military presence in San Diego supports a significant number of small businesses, which account for approximately
47%
of all military-related jobs.
“This research provides valuable insights into the economic importance of San Diego’s military community,” said Robert Ruiz, a Rady School professor and co-author of the study. “It also underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to support military families and ensure that they have access to quality education, healthcare, and other essential services.”
The study also examined the economic impact of military presence in neighboring counties, including Imperial, Riverside, and Orange. Collectively, these counties saw an estimated $35 billion contribution to the regional economy from military-related activities in 2017.

Artificial Intelligence, or simply AI, refers to the ability of a machine or computer program to mimic or imitate intelligent human behavior. This fascinating field of study and technology has been a subject of imagination and intrigue for generations, from the early works of Alan Turing and Marvin Minsky to the latest advancements in deep learning and machine vision. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the history, principles, applications, and future of artificial intelligence, as well as its potential impact on our society and the world at large.
History of Artificial Intelligence
The origins of artificial intelligence can be traced back to the 1950s, when pioneers like Alan Turing, Marvin Minsky, and John McCarthy first began to explore the possibilities of creating intelligent machines. In the following decades, AI research made significant strides in areas such as logic programming, expert systems, and neural networks, but it also faced numerous setbacks and disappointments. Today, AI is experiencing a new wave of excitement and investment as companies like Google, Microsoft, and IBM pour resources into developing advanced machine learning algorithms and robotics.
Principles of Artificial Intelligence
At its core, artificial intelligence is based on a few fundamental principles. One of the earliest and most influential was Turing’s Test, which posits that a machine is intelligent if it can convince a human evaluator that it is human. Another key principle is machine learning, which involves training algorithms to recognize patterns and make decisions based on data. Other important areas of AI research include natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and cognitive computing.
Applications of Artificial Intelligence
The applications of artificial intelligence are vast and varied, from improving customer service through chatbots to revolutionizing healthcare with machine learning algorithms. Other areas where AI is making a significant impact include finance, transportation, manufacturing, and education. In the future, AI may even help us solve some of our most pressing global challenges, such as climate change, poverty, and disease.
Future of Artificial Intelligence
The future of artificial intelligence is uncertain, but one thing is clear: it will continue to transform our world in ways that are both exciting and challenging. Some experts predict that AI will eventually surpass human intelligence, leading to a new era of technological advancement. Others warn of the potential risks and ethical dilemmas raised by powerful AI systems. Whatever the future holds, it is certain that artificial intelligence will be a defining technology of our time.
