Hurricane Helene: Live Updates and Impacts on the East Coast
As of September 25, 2018, Hurricane Helene continues to
threatening
the East Coast of the United States with heavy rainfall and strong winds. Although the storm has weakened to a
Category 1 hurricane
, its
tropical-storm-force winds
are expected to reach North and South Carolina, Georgia, and the Mid-Atlantic region. Unfortunately,
the human toll of Hurricane Helene
has already been felt; as of now, at least five people have died due to the storm.
The first fatalities were reported in the Leeward Islands, where Helene caused
extensive damage
to homes and businesses. The storm’s heavy rains also triggered landslides, which further complicated relief efforts. In the United States, a man in North Carolina died when he was electrocuted while attempting to connect extension cords during an power outage caused by the storm. Two other deaths were reported due to car accidents on wet roads.
As Helene approaches the East Coast, residents in its path have been urged to
evacuate
and take precautions. The storm is expected to bring between 2 and 6 inches of rain, which could cause flooding in low-lying areas. Winds are predicted to reach up to 75 miles per hour along the coast.
The National Hurricane Center advises that people in the potential impact areas should monitor local weather forecasts and follow instructions from state and local officials. This includes staying informed about evacuation orders, securing their homes, and making a plan for emergencies.
