Wildcat Welcome Week:

Kicking off the academic year, NMU’s Wildcat Welcome Week

is a

student-oriented weeklong event

designed to help new students connect with the university community. From academic resources and student organizations to social activities, this event sets the stage for a successful academic year.

Annual Homecoming:

A cherished tradition at NMU, the annual Homecoming

celebration brings alumni and current students together for a weekend filled with activities, sports, and social events. It’s an opportunity for students to connect with their peers and build lasting relationships.

Winter Carnival:

Braving the chilly Upper Peninsula winter, NMU students come together for the annual Winter Carnival

– a week-long event featuring ice sculptures, bonfires, and winter activities. This celebration not only offers students a chance to embrace the winter season but also fosters school spirit and community engagement.

Campus Involvement Fair:

Campus involvement plays a crucial role in enhancing the college experience and fostering personal growth for students. According to a study by the American College Personnel Association, students who are actively engaged in extracurricular activities are more likely to persist in their education and report greater satisfaction with their college experience. Another study by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators found that students who participate in campus organizations are more likely to feel connected to their college community, develop leadership skills, and have a stronger sense of purpose.

Personal Stories:

“Joining the debate team completely changed my college experience,” shares Sarah, a junior. “I’ve made lifelong friends, gained confidence in public speaking, and even traveled to compete against other colleges.” Similarly, Mike, a senior in engineering, reflects, “Being part of the robotics club has given me hands-on experience and helped me build a network of industry professionals.”

Campus Involvement Fair:

The Campus Involvement Fair, an annual event, is designed to help students discover and connect with various organizations, clubs, and student groups. Held

September 15th

in the Student Union, this year’s fair will feature over

100

participating groups. From academic societies and cultural organizations to volunteer initiatives and sports teams, there’s something for every student.

Fair Format:

The fair will be set up with table displays where students can gather information, speak with current members, and learn about upcoming events. Some organizations may also provide short presentations to showcase their mission and activities. This format allows students to make informed decisions before committing to a group.

Why Attend?

We encourage all students to attend the Campus Involvement Fair and actively engage with various organizations. The potential benefits for your academic and social lives are immense! Meet new people, explore interests outside the classroom, build leadership skills, and make a difference on campus. Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your college experience.

I Homecoming Weekend

NMU’s Homecoming tradition, a cherished event at Northern Michigan University (NMU), celebrates the university’s rich history and fosters a sense of connection between current students, alumni, and the community. This annual autumn event has been a staple at NMU since its inception over six decades ago. Its significance lies in bringing together individuals who share a common bond – the Wildcat spirit – for a weekend filled with reminiscing, learning, and reconnecting.

Historical Significance

The first Homecoming Weekend

at NMU was celebrated in the late 1950s. Since then, it has grown into an eagerly anticipated annual tradition, where alumni from all corners of the globe return to their alma mater, rekindling memories and forming new ones.

Homecoming Weekend Events

Schedule of Festivities:

The weekend is packed with various events designed to cater to different interests. The highlight of Homecoming Weekend is the football game, where the Wildcats

take on their opponents on the field. Besides the game, there are several

alumni panel discussions

featuring renowned alumni who share their professional experiences and insights. Additionally, numerous social gatherings

provide opportunities for networking and mingling among the NMU community.

The Homecoming Parade: A Community Celebration

An integral part of Homecoming Weekend is the Homecoming parade

, which winds its way through the streets of Marquette. Featuring floats designed and manned by various student organizations, the parade is a colorful display of school spirit. It not only unites the NMU community but also showcases the connection between the university and the broader Marquette community.

A Call to Participate

Current students:

are encouraged to partake in Homecoming Weekend activities. Engaging with alumni and other attendees can lead to valuable connections that may help in future academic or career pursuits. Furthermore, alumni are invited to return to campus and relive their college days. Homecoming Weekend offers an unparalleled opportunity for both groups to reconnect, reminisce about shared experiences, and create new memories together.

Wildcat Welcome

Welcome to Northern Michigan University! The start of a new academic year brings excitement and anticipation for both returning students and newcomers. To ensure a successful transition for our new students, we have designed a series of events called Wildcat Welcome. This comprehensive program is specifically crafted to help new students acclimate to life at NMU and immerse themselves in our campus culture.

The Importance of a Successful Transition

The first days and weeks on campus can be overwhelming for new students. They must navigate unfamiliar academic expectations, meet new people, and learn the ins and outs of campus life. Wildcat Welcome aims to alleviate some of this stress by providing valuable resources, information, and opportunities for connection. By offering a variety of events, we strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment that fosters a strong sense of community.

Wildcat Welcome Events

Orientation Sessions:

Our orientation program provides new students with essential information about academics, resources, and student life. They will have the opportunity to meet academic advisors, register for classes, and attend informative sessions on topics such as financial aid, housing, and student organizations.

Campus Tours:

To help new students get familiar with the campus layout, we offer guided tours of the facility. These tours cover essential areas like academic buildings, residence halls, dining facilities, and recreational centers.

Social Gatherings and Activities:

Wildcat Welcome also includes a range of social events designed to encourage interaction among students. These activities may include welcome picnics, ice-breaking games, and campus-wide scavenger hunts.

Role of Returning Students

We also encourage our returning students to participate in Wildcat Welcome events. They can act as mentors, facilitators, and ambassadors for new students. By engaging with the incoming class, returning students help create a warm, welcoming campus environment that fosters a strong sense of community.
